Contractor Licensing for Tradies: What You Need in Each State
If you're a tradie running your own business — an electrician, plumber, gas fitter, refrigeration mechanic, or other trade — your licence is the foundation of everything you do. For a complete overview of your obligations, see our trades compliance checklist. Work without it, and you're operating illegally. Let it lapse, and you're in the same position. Take on work that falls outside your licence category, and you may face disciplinary action.
Trade licensing in Australia is administered at the state and territory level. There is no single national tradie licence. This means the rules differ depending on where you work — and if you're operating across state borders, you need to understand both.
Electricians
Electrical work is licensed and regulated by state electrical safety regulators, separately from general contractor or builder licences.
NSW — Fair Trading NSW / SafeWork NSW
- Electrical contractor licence — required to contract for electrical work
- Electrical mechanic (worker) licence — required to carry out electrical work
- Licences are renewed periodically; check current renewal periods
VIC — Energy Safe Victoria (ESV)
- Electrical contractor licence — required for businesses doing electrical work
- Electrical worker licence — required for individuals performing electrical work
- Annual renewal
QLD — Electrical Safety Office
- Electrical contractor licence — required for businesses
- Electrical work licence — required for workers
- Annual renewal; CPD requirements apply
WA — EnergySafety (part of DMIRS)
- Electrical contractor's licence — for businesses
- Electrician's licence — for individual workers
- Separate licence categories apply
Other states
Similar frameworks apply in SA (Technical Regulator), TAS (CBOS), ACT (Access Canberra), and NT (NT WorkSafe). Always check the local regulator.
Mutual recognition: Limited electrical licence mutual recognition exists between some states and territories. Do not assume your state licence automatically applies interstate — check with the relevant regulator before doing interstate work.
Plumbers
Plumbing licensing is separate from electrical and building licensing.
NSW — Fair Trading NSW
- Plumbing contractor licence — for businesses doing plumbing work
- Plumbing (qualified supervisor) certificate — for individuals
- Covers: plumbing, drainage, roofing (stormwater), gasfitting (separate endorsement)
- Renewal required
VIC — Victorian Building Authority (VBA)
- Plumbing registration — registered plumbers and limited plumbers (the VBA registers plumbers, not licences them)
- Categories include: plumbing, gasfitting, drainlaying, roofing (stormwater), sanitary
- Annual renewal
QLD — QBCC
- Plumbing licence — QBCC issues trade contractor licences for plumbing and drainage
- Separate licence categories apply for different types of plumbing work
WA — Building and Energy
- Plumbing contractor licence — for businesses
- Plumber's licence — for individuals
- Annual renewal
Gas Fitters
Gas fitting is typically a sub-category or separate endorsement of the plumbing licence framework, regulated by gas safety authorities:
- NSW: Gas fitting is licensed through Fair Trading NSW as an additional authorisation to the plumbing licence
- VIC: Gasfitting is a separate plumbing registration category through the VBA
- QLD: Gas fitting is a separate licence through the QBCC
- SA: Gas fitting is regulated by the Office of the Technical Regulator
- WA: Gas fitting is regulated by Building and Energy
Gas work is one of the highest-risk licensing areas — working without a valid gas fitting licence is a serious offence and creates significant public safety and liability risk.
Refrigeration and Air Conditioning Mechanics
Refrigeration and air conditioning mechanics who handle refrigerant gases must be licensed under the Refrigerant Handling Licence framework, which is a national scheme administered by the Australian Refrigeration Council (ARC).
ARC licence types:
- Refrigerant Trading Authorisation (RTA) — required to purchase, handle, and dispose of refrigerants
- Refrigerant Handling Licence (RHL) — individual mechanics who handle refrigerant gases must hold an RHL
The ARC licence is national — you can use it in all states and territories.
Additionally: State licensing for electrical work may be required depending on the type of work performed.
Builders and Other Contractors
See our companion article on Building Licensing Requirements by State for detailed information on builder registration and licensing.
What Happens When Your Licence Lapses?
A lapsed licence means you are no longer legally authorised to perform the licensed work. The consequences:
- Legal exposure — performing unlicensed work is an offence in every jurisdiction. Fines can be substantial (often in the thousands or tens of thousands of dollars)
- Insurance exposure — most PI and public liability insurers will not cover claims arising from unlicensed work. A serious injury or property damage incident while unlicensed could leave you personally liable
- Loss of work — government contracts and many commercial clients require current licences. You may be unable to complete work or invoice without a current licence
- Consumer protection exposure — work done without a licence in residential building contexts may give homeowners rights to reject the work or claim compensation
Keeping Your Licence Current: A Practical System
Given the diversity of licensing obligations and renewal periods, a simple system is essential:
- Create a licence register — list every licence you hold, its expiry date, and the renewal process
- Set 60-day reminders — for each licence, set a calendar reminder 60 days before expiry to initiate the renewal process
- Track CPD — many trade licences require CPD as part of renewal. Know the requirements for each licence you hold
- Check interstate requirements before taking on work in another state
